sushi bowls

Ask me a food that I will never get sick of and you will always get the same answer: sushi. I feel like it’s a dish where you love it or don’t, and for me, I absolutely love it. For most people, it’s one of those things where you’re either dining in at your favorite sushi restaurant, or you’re ordering takeout for an easy dinner. It’s not necessarily a dinner you’re whipping up for yourself on a weeknight.

That’s where “deconstructed sushi bowls” get invited to the party! A recipe that is quite simple to make at home and very customizable, based on what you like. The possibilities are endless here:

  • white rice

  • brown rice

  • cauliflower rice !!

  • cukes

  • carrots

  • avocado

  • pickled red onion

  • edamame

  • green onions

  • crispy onions

  • furikake

  • nori sheets

  • tuna

  • salmon

  • shrimp

  • spicy mayo

  • soy glaze

You get the gist! VVV customizable so do what you want here! Here is my take on one of my favorite dinners that satisfies all of my sushi cravings.

deconstructed sushi bowls

ingredients

tuna

  • Marinade ahi tuna in a mixture of soy sauce, sesame oil, lime juice, rice vinegar, honey and ginger for 15-20 minutes.

  • Depending on the grade of your tuna, either slice it raw or give it a quick sear on each side for 10-15 seconds, then slice.

spicy mayo

  • Mix 1/4 cup Kewpie mayo with 1-2 teaspoons of sriracha. Add more or less depending on your spice preference.

assembly

  • Build sushi bowl with white rice, sliced tuna, matchstick cukes, matchstick carrots, pickled red onions, sliced green onions, sliced avocado, edamame, nori sheets, sesame seeds and spicy mayo. I like to add some of the tuna marinade at the end for an extra saucy feel.
